Born May 13, 1922 in Chicago, IL to Brenton and Marie (Million) Hummer, Bob was adopted by Charles and Margaret (Desch) Hummer, and grew up in Delphos, Ohio. He completed undergraduate and graduate work in physics at Northwestern University. After working in weapons development for the Navy at China Lake, CA, Bob was a key employee at Santa Barbara Research Center, CA, the research arm of Hughes Aircraft Company, from 1958 to 1980. His career included supervising the development of weather satellites to produce the now familiar TV images of weather patterns, Landsat earth-mapping, and equipment to be used on Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft explorations of Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus.

After retiring to Green Valley in l986, Bob was active in the GVR Camera Club and Hiking Club. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife of 25 years, Elizabeth (Farnum), and by four children: Steven Hummer, Alissa Hummer, Laurie Hummer, all of Santa Barbara, CA, and Carolyn Hummer (Brenda Hoff) of Santa Rosa, CA. Two grandchildren, Claire Hummer and Andrew Zecher, live in Santa Barbara. Bob is also survived by his former wife, Marjorie Hummer, of Santa Barbara.

Characterized by his former colleagues at SBRC as "a gentleman and a scholar," Bob was a multi-talented man of diverse interests who will be remembered with love and appreciation by family and friends. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no services for Bob. The family wants to thank the staff of Carondelet Hospice and caregivers Connie and Cristina for their loving concern and help.
