NELSON, CHARLES W., 84

Gainesville, FL - Charles W. Nelson, 84, of Gainesville, passed away on December 14, 2013. Born in Big Bend, WI and raised in Mukwonago, WI, he earned his BS and MS from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and his Ph.D. from University of Maryland. Moving to Florida in 1966 where he was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Florida for 29 years, serving as the Associate Dean of the Mathematics Department when he retired. He also received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Advisor of the Year and Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching awards in 1994; authoring many math textbooks throughout his career.

He enjoyed his 47 years as a dedicated member of the University Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir, functioned in numerous capacities, and even served as a reader just two weeks ago. He treasured many years of playing golf, singing in the Gainesville Civic Chorus and worrying about the grass in the front yard.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Nelson; daughter Christina Robertson and son-in-law Preston Robertson, daughter Dana Miller and son-in-law Mark Miller, son Mark Nelson and daughter-in-law Cheryl Nelson, and nephew Drew Hauck. Also surviving are six grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at University Lutheran Church, 1826 West University Ave., Gainesville, on Friday, December 20, 2013 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor may be made to the . Please visit his memorial page at
