LaMAY, CHERYL ANN
Gainesville - Cheryl Ann LaMay, MD passed away in Gainesville, FL on Friday, October 11, 2013. She was born March 25, 1951 in Boise, Idaho to Ethel Mabel Curtis and Armand Joseph Lamay.
Cheryl attended the University of Florida Medical School and was the Chief Resident Physician in her graduating class in 1982. Her area of expertise was Pathology. Dr. LaMay was a pathologist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Gainesville, Florida and a long time Gainesville resident.
She was an accomplished gardener, was skilled in the culinary arts and loved feeding people. She was an avid supporter of the cultural and performing arts and was a frequently patron of local and central Florida theaters.
Cheryl was also an enthusiastic member and supporter of the SisterSong Women's Community Choir and could always be counted on to bring something scrumptious from her generous kitchen.
Dr. LaMay believed strongly in supporting human rights on the local and statewide levels. As a long time feminist she had worked for the Equal Rights Amendment and domestic violence and child sexual abuse projects. Cheryl also actively supported the Pride Community Center of North Central Florida.
Cheryl was a passionate environmentalist and actively supported the Alachua Conservation Trust, the Evinston/Orange Lake Preservation Project, The Nature Conservancy, as well as other environmental organizations. She gave freely of her time and resources and worked to preserve the environmental legacy of Alachua County.
Dr. LaMay had a lifelong love of nature and enjoyed all outdoor activities, including swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking, biking, and cross cultural traveling.
Dr. Cheryl LaMay will be remembered for her kindness and generosity on all levels which she demonstrated to others regardless of station in life.
In addition to being survived by a community left richer by the many contributions she made, she is survived by her life partner, Carol M. Gordon of Gainesville, and her siblings, Brian Paul LaMay, Denise Estrel, Valarie LaMay, Laura Holmes, and Bruce LaMay.
A Celebration of Life service and green burial were held on October 12, 2013. We greatly appreciate the assistance of Milam Funeral Home and Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery.
