Gainesville, FL - Clifford W. "Bill" Gurney, age 89, passed away on April 10, 2014, a day before his 90th birthday.

Bill was born April 11, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to Clifford and Margaret Gurney. He attended Calumet High School in Chicago, the University of Chicago for both college and medical school, and completed his residency training at the University of Michigan.

He was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago, and taught biology and genetics to undergraduates at the college, before retiring to Gainesville in 1989. He was a longtime member of the Athenaeum. He served our country as a meteorologist and flight control officer during World War II, stationed in England, and later in France and Germany during post-war reconstruction.

He was an avid reader, traveler, lifelong student and teacher.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Doris, and their five children, Ellen & Bob Ogden, Beth & Josh Goldstein, Melissa & Paul Harp, Paul & Renee Gurney, and Gwen & Jim O'Hara, and his numerous grandchildren, and his brother Jack Gurney.
