ELIJAH JAMES, 82

Micanopy - Elijah James "E.J." Jenkins, age 82 of Micanopy, passed away Friday, June 28, 2013 in E.T. York Care Center. He was born May 27, 1931 in Live Oak, Florida to Lewis Melvin Jenkins, Sr., and Mattie Henrietta Brown Robinson Jenkins. He was a Navy Hospital Corpsman with the United States Marines during the Korean War. Afterwards he attended the University of Florida; he worked for American Cyanamid in Brewster, FL and then went to work for University of Florida in food technology, physics and material science and engineering as an electron microscopist. He worked for University of Florida for 30 years. He then set up micro analytical labs while working for E.S.E. Labs and then helped N.I.S.T. (Dept. of the Interior US Federal Government) to set up and evaluate asbestos testing for laboratories that tested for asbestos in schools, factories, homes and set up the US government's standards that are still followed to this day.

He was a member of Oak Park Baptist Church since 1984 where he served as deacon, Sunday School director and Sunday School teacher. He also was a cub scout leader in Marion and Alachua Counties, filmed high-school football games for Hawthorne High School and took many students on field trips from Micanopy, Idylwild, Hawthorne and Howard Bishop Schools. E.J. was an avid Gator fan. He held the same season football tickets for 48 years (section 6, row 13, seats 13 and 14), was a booster for Gator football, basketball (men's and women's) baseball, gymnastics and track and field. EJ was also an avid gardener of citrus and flowers, a lover of nature and was listed as a buzzard or raptor recovery service for south Alachua County. He cared for all wildlife on George's pond (deer, turkey, squirrels, owls, hawks, otters, raccoons and birds)

He is survived by wife of 58 years, Dottie Jenkins; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Leesa Jenkins of Lakeland, FL and brother, Lewis Melvin Jenkins, Jr., of Williamston, MI. He was preceded in death by half-brother and half-sister on his mother's side, Clarence Robinson and Essie Collette and half-brothers on his father's side that are too numerous to name.

Memorial Services will be conducted Friday, July 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Oak Park Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Austin officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorials to Oak Park Baptist Church, 4610 SW Archer Road, Gainesville, FL 32608 or Haven Hospice, 4200 NW 90th Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32606.
