Orlando, FL - Jane W. Blalock, PhD., age 74 of Orlando, FL, passed away in Orlando on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. She was born on November 18, 1939 in Gainesville, FL, parents Lewis F. and Essie Nell Blalock. Jane was raised in Gainesville and was a dedicated student from childhood. She graduated from J.J. Finley Elementary School, Gainesville High School, and the University of Florida. She received a Master's degree in speech pathology from Vanderbilt University, and a PhD in learning disabilities from Northwestern University. She spent several years as a professor at Northwestern University, and later was the Director of Educational Services at the Atlanta Speech School. Jane had a passion for teaching and helping children and adults with learning disabilities. She served on many boards and as an officer in multiple state and national organizations for learning disabilities, and co-authored a textbook on the subject. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and remained active in an alumni group which vacationed together.

Though she was very dedicated to her profession, she was not "all work". She smiled and laughed easily, and always considered Gainesville as her home. Jane was overjoyed with moving back to Gainesville from Atlanta when she retired. She was a loyal Gator fan, and attended most of the football games while living in Atlanta, and was occasionally annoyed with the Georgia fans.

Jane is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert and Lesley Blalock of Orlando, two nephews and a niece and eight great nephews and nieces. She leaves behind many close friends, and while she never had any children of her own, loved her niece and nephews as if they were her own.
