Alachua - Dr. James L. Kirkland, Jr., age 91 of Alachua, passed away at his home Monday, April 8, 2013. He was born March 24, 1922 in Graceville, Florida to James L. and Pauline Knapp Kirkland. Dr. Kirkland proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII. He had a dental practice in Gainesville for over 40 years, having been the dentist for the Gators from 1948 to 1956. He loved to hunt and fish and loved the Gators. He was a member of Gainesville Quarterback Club, Gator Booster, Gainesville Elks Lodge, Garden Club and many dental associations over the years. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Williams Kirkland in 2007. He is survived by his son, Jim Kirkland of Sweetwater, TN; niece, Wynona Watson of New Port Richey, FL and nephew, Bubba Williams of Gainesville, FL.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m., in Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Alan Gaylord officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m., at the church. Interment will follow in Memorial Park East, 3700 SE Hawthorne Road.
Arrangements are under the care of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME DOWNTOWN, 404 North Main Street.
