Gainesville, FL - Lester 'Les' Arthur Crews, Jr. of Gainesville, FL went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 26, 2014 after an extended illness. Lester Crews was born on February 22, 1926 in Ortega, Florida to Lester Arthur Sr. and Adeleine Davis Crews. After graduating from Jones Business College in Jacksonville, Florida, Lester joined the United States Navy in 1944 and married Hazel Fralix Crews of Gulf Hammock, Florida on June 8, 1956 just six weeks after they met; they were happily married for 58 years. After 30 years of service in the Navy during World WarII, Korean War and Vietnam War he continued to work a few years at the University of Florida until full retirement. Lester loved gardening, reading, playing the piano and physical wellness. He was known by all as a kind man who could play a lively boogie woogie.

Lester Crews is survived by his loving wife, Hazel Crews; two sons and their wives, Don and Linda Crews of Alpharetta, Georgia and Mike and Debbie Crews of High Springs, Florida; three grandchildren, Leslie, Colby and Michael; his brother, Curt Crews and sister, Shelly Durden.

A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, August 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of WILLIAMS-THOMAS FUNERAL HOME WESTAREA, 823 NW 143rd Street with Pastor Gary Hardesty officiating. Burial will follow in Chiefland Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Friday, August 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
