Dr. Lucius Winston Battle Jr. passed away at Sacred Heart hospital in Pensacola, FL on Wednesday, 6 November. He was a resident of Rosewood Manor in Pensacola since April of this year and had contracted pneumonia, from which he was unable to recover. He is survived by his step son Richard, his daughter in law Francisca, and his sister in law Kathleen. He was 79 years old.
Lucius Winston Battle, Jr. was born on June 19, 1934 in Hartwell, Georgia. He was a graduate of the University Of Georgia and Received a Doctorate of Dentistry from Emory University. He was a Vietnam War veteran and retired from the US Army Dental Corps at the rank of Colonel. Upon retiring he worked at Sloan Kettering Institute in New York and later taught dentistry at Columbia University, prior to moving to Gainesville to teach part time at the University of Florida.
He married Margaret Morris Lowe in July of 1973 and they remained together until her passing in January 2008. They were both members of All Saints Anglican Church. A memorial service will be held at Forest Meadows of Gainesville in the near future. Arrangements are in the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home (352) 378-2528.
