He first taught high school in Alachua, Florida and after receiving his Master's Degree, taught at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. During his tenure at Hillsdale, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring as a Lt. Commander.

Bob returned to Gainesville after retiring from Hillsdale College. He worked as an appraiser for Arnold Realty for a number of years and later served as the night manager for Rush Lake Motel.

Bob never married. He is survived by his first cousin Anne Adams of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, several distant cousins with whom he frequently corresponded and many friends. He will be interred in his family's cemetery near DePauw, Indiana.
