Gainesville - William "Bill" Kent Thompson, 57, passed peacefully at home October 22, 2013 after a long illness.

He was born December 27, 1955, to William W. and Anita L. (Jones) Thompson at Rantoul, IL, Chanute Air Force Base. Bill attended several schools growing up, graduating high school in Taylorville, IL in 1974 and soon joined the Army. He was based at Fort Leonardwood, MO, Fort Belvoir, VA and Fort Knox, KY. Upon his discharge he moved his family to Gainesville, FL in 1984 where he worked at the University of Florida; first in housing then Physical Plant, retiring in 2011 due to his health.

Bill is survived by his caretaker and best friend, Shirley Diehl, his parents, a son, Johnathan (Denise) of Apopka, FL, daughter Bridgett (Jeff) Zeitler of Chicago, IL, two brothers, James A. (Kathleen) of Windsor, FL and Steven L. of Taylorville, IL, one sister, Susan (Phillip) Pons of Windsor, FL, three grandchildren, Seth Thompson, Ryan and Lillian Zeitler, several aunts, uncles, cousins and his dog, Joey.

He played in the school band and also played guitar and sang in the small band as a teenager, was also a big fan of the Beatles. He was a Christian.

Bill will be greatly missed by family and friends. there will be no service at his request.
