Samuel Andrew George Herndon, III died at age 77, on October 3, 2013 at the Cheyenne Mountain Care Center after a month long bought with pneumonia. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, October 12th at 2pm at the Dove Witt Funeral home, led by Pastor Steve Turrentine.

Sam was born December 31st, 1935 in Los Angeles, California, to Daisy Bell and Samuel Andrew George Herndon, II. George, as his father was known, was lost in 1943 in an on the job accident while building Victory Ships for the war. Daisy later met and married Austin Leon Powers, a muleskinner for the Army. Austin became a farmer when he was diagnosed with severe arthritis. Sam worked on the farm as a small child, through his teen years. He married Clara Barber and had a child, Georgia Lee in 1953. The marriage did not last long. Through his early adult years, Sam worked as a dock worker before going into the Army in 1956. He also married Phyllis Jean Winder in August 1956 in Agency, Missouri. Moving his new family to Virginia, he became an Army Aircraft Inspector while serving in various locations; Germany, Korea, Japan and Vietnam as Sergeant First Class. In 1975, Sam moved his family to Widefield, Colorado, loving the view and fresh air. Sam carried on his inspector career after retirement from the Army in 1976 as a Quality Inspector for various companies. He also loved to put on his Santa uniform and hear wishes from children during the Christmas season. Other hobbies included calligraphy, photography, drawing, wood carving, leatherwork, baking and cooking.
While in the Army, Sam received the following Medals and awards: Aircraft Crewman Badge; Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/ Palm; Vietnam Service Medal w/ 4 Bronze Service Stars; National Defense Service Medal; Air Medal; Bronze Star Medal; Meritorious Unit Citation; Valorous Unit Award; Good Conduct Medal 1st through 5th Awards.
Sam is preceded in death by his daughter Georgia Lee (1961), Son Richard Mark (1977), and Brother Jim Powers. He is survived by his Wife of 57 years, Phyllis, Brother, John William Herndon (wife Louise) of Phoenix, AZ, Brother, Tom Powers (wife Bea) St. Joseph, MO, Son, Samuel Andrew George Herndon IV (wife Barb) Scott City, MO, Son, Steven Matthew Herndon (wife Maria) Calhan, CO, and Daughter, Deborah Susan Herndon (husband Eldon) Widefield, CO. Sam had 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
