Walter (Walt) James Biggs, 84, LtCol USAF (ret), a decorated veteran of Korea and Vietnam, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2014 at the Cheyenne House, Life Quality Homes, Colorado Springs, CO, in the presence of his family.
Walt was born to Walter G. and Lenore L. Biggs in McHenry, N.D. on September 25, 1929. He married Delores (Dolly) Anderson Ness on April 5, 1968. He became an Eagle Scout in Hankinson, N.D. in November 1945 and graduated from high school in Fargo, N.D. in May 1947. He earned his B.S. Agriculture from North Dakota State University in June 1951 through a Navy ROTC scholarship.
Walt entered the Air Force on June 25, 1951 at Selfridge AFB, MI. Tours of duty included Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Washington D.C., and Colorado Springs, CO, where he served as Director, Manpower and Management Engineering, NORAD/ADCOM until his retirement in 1979. While on active duty, he earned a B.S. Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wyoming (1963) and an M.S. Industrial Engineering from Arizona State University (1968). Following retirement he pursued his interests in architectural design and construction, building a mountain retreat for his family in Teller County, and a home in the Garden of the Gods area.
Walt is survived by his wife, Dolly, daughters Carla Garbarini of Charleston, S.C.; Chey Ness of Lafayette, CO; sons Dale Ness (wife Laurie Mickey) of Broomfield, CO; and James Biggs (wife Debbie) of Colorado Springs; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and three nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Florence Steffey, and son Kerry Ness.
A memorial gathering, with full military honors, will be held at the "cabin" on Saturday, July 12, 2014, 11:00 am.
