Anita (Zimmerman) Johnson

Lewistown —Anita Austin Zimmerman Johnson of Lewistown passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2013 after a short illness. She was married to Robert L. (Bob) Johnson, Attorney, who preceded her in death in 2004. She is survived by three children: Neal L. Johnson of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Alan W. Johnson of Dayton, Ohio and Robin L. Fleming of Lewistown. A fourth child, Stanley W. Johnson II of Helena, died in September 2012. Anita has three grandchildren and three step grandchildren: Lindsay Johnson and Austin Johnson of Dayton, Ohio, Kristian Fleming and Tate Fleming of Lewistown, Tanya Hanna of Springfield, Missouri, and Skylar Fleming of Seattle, Washington.

Anita was born in Portland, Oregon on May 5th, 1925 to parents Neal Lynn and Charlotte Austin Seeley Zimmerman. She was well-educated, obtaining an Associate of Arts degree from Stephens College of Columbia, Missouri in 1944, a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University of Palo Alto, California in 1946, and a Master of Arts from Columbia University in New York in 1948. When the Korean War began, Anita volunteered for the American Red Cross and was assigned to duty in Taegu, Korea. There she met her future husband Bob, who was serving in the 934 Signal Battalion as a lieutenant in the US Air Force. They married on 14 November 1952 in Portland Oregon, and lived in several places in Washington, Oregon and Montana while Bob finished his military service and attended law school. They settled in Lewistown in 1958 and raised their family in Central Montana.

Anita made significant contributions to local and Montana state schools. She taught at a number of schools both full-time and as a substitute from 1961 through 1976. She served on the Lewistown District #1 School Board for 15 years and was Chairman for 5 years. She was Montana State School Board Vice President from 1979-1980 and President from 1980-1981. She served on several prestigious boards, including the Board of Directors, Northwest Regional Laboratory, Portland Oregon from 1979-1985; Executive Committee, Northwest Regional Laboratory in 1981 and 1984; Northwest Women in Education Administration, Portland Oregon from 1982-1985; and the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind for more than a decade. Anita was a member of Chapter J, P.E.O. She regularly volunteered her time and energy for many local causes.

Anita embraced life with zest. She loved spending time outdoors, whether tending her garden or watching the ocean on the Oregon coast, or spending time at Flathead Lake. Anita was an enthusiastic Montanan but never forgot her Oregon roots. She was an avid golfer and played well into her 80s. Anita also enjoyed years of special friendship with her bridge club. Her family thanks New Horizons Assisted Living of Lewistown, Hospice of Central Montana, and the staff at the Central Montana Skilled Nursing Center for their excellent support and care. Mom - give Dad a big hug for us when you see him in Heaven! We love you so much!
