Duane Doyle Martin was born March 3, 1949 in Sidney, MT, and was the fourth of five children born to Harold and Edith (Danielson) Martin. Duane began his education at Mona School and upon completing primary school he attended high school in Lambert where he met his future wife, Petrea Pedersen. After finishing two years at Lambert High School, Duane transferred to complete his education in Culbertson. Though he left Lambert, he continued to court Petrea and they were married in 1967. While attending Northern Montana College Duane and Petrea met and fell in love with their oldest son, Jamie, adopting him in 1970. After earning his bachelor's degree in Education, Duane accepted a position teaching math and science at the East Fairview School. In January of 1972, they welcomed their second son, Jody. Though not in his original plans, Duane made a decision, after teaching for about 3 years, to move out to help his father on the farm. Completing the family, Coy joined the Martin farm in 1978 and Duane continued to work the land even as his health began to fail.
Duane nurtured the land God gave him and treated each crop like a newborn baby checking it daily as it sprouted, grew, and matured. He spent many hours not only caring for his livestock, but watching their behavior and knew each cow and calf and what to expect from them. Duane experienced much adversity but reacted with tenacity and persistence. He was a true farmer, never wanting to leave the place where he was raised and where he found his calling. He loved his sons and always held them to higher ideals, and gave them the example of a good work ethic. He wanted the best for his grandchildren and often expressed concern about how the experiences in their lives and in this world might affect them. He was quiet and private, holding much in his heart and mind, providing only glimpses to a few people of his depth of character. The last few months of his life were difficult and he took particular pride in his determination to seed his crop and care for his newborn calves this spring.
Duane served on the Fairview School Board, was a member of the Sidney Elks Club, the Church of Christ, and went to Washington with a delegation to rally support for farm issues. He drove the school bus for many years and saw more than a few local children move through the school system. Unknown to many, Duane was an exceptional musician and singer.
He passed away in Billings, MT, at noon on September 20, 2013, surrounded by his family.
