Great Falls —Gordon James Gies, 68, of Great Falls, passed away at his home after his battle with lung cancer on May 9, 2014. In honor of Gordon, a memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 22, at 1:30 pm in the Rose Room Chapel at Croxford Funeral Home.
Gordon Gies was born on March 23, 1946, in Seattle, Washington, to Benjamin Gies and Hazel Helgeson. The Gies family later moved to Great Falls, where Gordon finished high school and later joined the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he attended classes for Electronics in ROC 352 and SCD Hard Tools. Later, Gordon served his Nation in the Vietnam Campaign. Following this tour in Vietnam, Gordon served as an electrician that helped ensure the safe landing of astronauts upon returning from space. Following his tour of duty with the United States Navy, Gordon held jobs with Anaconda Company, Rich Rossbergh, Dan Daly, and returned to Rich Rossbergh where he stayed until became ill.
Having always been fascinated with motorcycles, Gordon was a life member in the American Motorcyclist Association. He also enjoyed American Historic Racing, and Dirt Track Motocross Post Vintage. He was also a member of the USBC Bowling Association and was an avid reader.
Gordon is survived by his wife, Mary Anderson Gies; mother, Hazel Helgeson Gies; daughters, Karen Sundquist Lund, Brandy Sundquist Johnson, Peggy Sundquist Kidiek; sister, Cindy Gies; brother, Doug Gies; and eight grandchildren.
Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Gies.
