Patricia Von Stein
Great Falls —Patricia Ann James Von Stein, 67, of Cascade passed away January 13, 2014 from cancer at Peace Hospice.
Services will be held January 18 at 11:00 am at Cascade School in the North Gymnasium, the easiest access will be through the commons. Reception to follow at the United Methodist Educational Building in Cascade. A family Interment Service will be held in the spring at Hillside Cemetery at Cascade. Arrangements are in the care of Croxford Funeral Home.
Pat was born April 18, 1946 in Helena the daughter of Edwin James and Ruby Gleason-James. She was raised on the family ranch in Chestnut Valley south of Cascade. She attended school in Cascade and graduated in 1964. She married Joseph Von Stein in 1965 and together they raised three children; Joe, Jill and Steve.
Pat graduated from college at Montana State University in Bozeman and taught in Three Forks. Pat and Joe then moved to Libby where their first child was born and Joe worked on the Libby Dam. After two years, Pat and Joe returned to the family ranch in Chestnut Valley where Pat spent her remaining years.
Pat was a 4-H leader, First Responder, and active board member of the Chestnut Valley Circle, Chestnut Valley Cemetery Board, United Methodist Church, Cascade Education Foundation and Wedsworth Library Board. Pat and Joe have been NOAA Weather Observers for many years, a tradition started by Pat's grandfather over 100 years ago. She also was an avid gardener and loved to read. She was a loving and devoted grandmother to her four grandsons.
In 1986 she returned to her true calling as a teacher. Pat taught middle school Science, Spanish, Health, English and Math and was still teaching at the time of her diagnosis. She was the coordinator and coach for Destination Imagination for many years and guided the students to several state championships. Pat was a kind and patient teacher who truly loved her students and profession.
Pat is survived by her husband, Joe of Cascade; sons, Joe (Shelley) of Big Sandy, Steve (Angie Davis) of Cascade; daughter, Jill (Trent) Howard of Mandan, ND; grandsons, Reed and Rhett Von Stein, Cutter and Holden Howard; mother-in-law, Lillian Von Stein; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dean and Carol Kienenberger.
