Gebhart, Claude J.

Claude J. Gebhart, age 90, of Chilton, died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012, at the Chilton Care Center in Chilton. He was born February 4, 1922 in the Town of Brothertown, son of the late Henry R. & Anna (Walber) Gebhart.

Claude proudly served his country during WWII as a Corporal in the United States Army Air Corps with the 319th Fighter Control Squadron Unit.

During his three years in service, this unit traveled from New Caledonia to the Solomon Islands to Enirau Island in the Bismark Archipelago Area. They then moved to Mindanao, to Leyte and finally onto Tokyo at the conclusion of the war.

Following his honorable discharge, Claude married Mildred Geiser on June 4, 1946, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton. They farmed together in the Town of Chilton and Claude cherished every moment he could spend working the land he loved, and tending to his dairy herd.

He had a vast knowledge of farming and was always proud to mention that he used organic farming practices, even before there was ever an organic certification. Even following his retirement, Claude frequently would ask about and check up on how the crops and the herd were doing.

He and Mildred enjoyed dancing to Polka music and Claude took time to feed and tend to the birds in his yard. He closely followed the Milwaukee Brewers, enjoyed playing Bingo, and looked forward to family gatherings where he could spend time with those he loved so dearly.

Claude was a devoted Catholic and truly celebrated his faith. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, formerly St. Mary Parish where he had served as a Eucharistic Minister for 30 years and devoted 8 years of his life to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel.

He had also been a member of the Chilton Eagles Club #1288, the Chilton VFW Post 3153, the Catholic Knights, the Knights of Columbus and the Calumet County Farm Bureau.

He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his children: Rosemary (Fred) Popp of Hilbert, Eileen (Mark) Buelke of Chilton, Virginia (Dave) Behrend of Oconto Falls, Leonard Gebhart of Menasha, Marjorie Hughes of St. Peter, MN, Norbert (Janet) Gebhart of Chilton; 21 grandchildren: Tim, Tom, Mike, Mark, Diana, Laura, Sarah, Jim, Jenny, Christopher, Amy, Mike, Dan, Tim, Rachel, Nick, Christina, Christopher, Jeremy, Nick, & Brian; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers-in-law: Robert (Bernadine) Pero of St. Augustine, FL, Richard (JoAnn) Geiser of Belgium, WI; and 2 sisters-in-law: Lorraine Geiser of Chilton, and Martha Geiser of Chilton. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years: Mildred; his parents: Henry & Anna Gebhart; his mother and father-in-law: August & Rosa (Greuel) Geiser; a brother: Hilary (Clarissa) Gebhart; a sister-in-law: Leonella Keuler; and his brothers-in-law: Edward Keuler, Werner Geiser, & Clarence Geiser.

Funeral service will be at 11:30 AM on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton. Burial will follow in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 AM until 11:15 AM on Saturday, June 23, 2012.

The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Chilton Care Center of all of the loving care that was provided to Claude.
