Gerda T. Nelson, age 93, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 at her home. She was born on April 8, 1920 in Galena, Illinois to the late Otto and Catherina (Holtermann) Kubitz. Gerda married John A. Nelson on December 27, 1950 in Madison. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1995.
Gerda was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church where she sang in the Chancel Choir and served with the women of the church, especially Mission Sewing.
Gerda graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a double major in flute performance and education. She received her Master's degree from the University of Illinois. Gerda taught music in elementary and high school teaching her last 17 years at Westwood Elementary School in the West De Pere School district. She retired in 1983.
Music was an important part in Gerda's life, which she shared with her children and many others. She was the principal flute in the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra for 15 years and with the Green Bay City Band for 40 years. After retiring from her professional playing career she continued her flute playing with former students in the Monday Morning Flute Group. Gerda also sang with various choral groups in the community.
Gerda shared her love of learning and talents with others, volunteering with Heritage Hill and serving as a 4-H sewing leader. After retirement, Gerda took up quilting. She was a long time member of Evergreen Quilters, Door County Quilters and Warmth from the Heart. She passed her love of quilting along to her daughters and looked forward to quilting with the girls.
Surviving are her five children, Alice (Dan) Gould of Madison, Tom (Lisa) Nelson of Iron Mountain, Michigan, Margaret Nelson and Dave Branger of Green Bay, Paul (Janice) Nelson of Weston; Katherine Nelson (John Phillipson) of Green Bay; grandchildren, Lora and TJ Gould, Kristin and Gregory Nelson, Anna (Matt) Stubbendick and Matt and Aaron Nelson; great-grandchildren, Kirsten Stubbendick and Zaniya Richardson. Gerda is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Oskar (Emma), Karl (Jane), Lothar (Garnette) and three sisters, Gertrud and Ada Kubitz and Frieda (Herb) Anderson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Lyndahl Funeral Home, 1350 Lombardi Avenue, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue again on Friday, March 7 at Grace Lutheran Church, 321 S. Madison Street, from 10:00 am until the funeral service at 11:00 am with Rev. Larry Lange officiating.
