James Oscar Knutson of Green Bay passed away May 3, 2014. He was born Sept. 25, 1929, in Chicago, IL to the late Oscar and Olga (Anderson) Knutson. The family moved to Sturgeon Bay, WI when Jim was three years old. He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1947.
After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Jim returned to Sturgeon Bay, working at Sturgeon Bay Metal Products and Peterson Builders as an electrician. He married the former Elsbeth Henning at St. John Lutheran Church in Valmy, WI, May 22, 1954.
In 1957, he joined the American Family Insurance Company as an agent for the Door County area, and remained in that capacity for over 40 years, retiring in 1998. Jim held various offices including Chairman of the Town of Nasewaupee, Chairman of the Door County Highway Committee and served on the Door County Board of Supervisors. One of his proudest moments was that of being involved in the formation of the Southern Door School District and the construction of the high school. He very much enjoyed being a part of VFW Post 3088 of Sturgeon Bay, as well as spending time in his cherry and apple orchard. In retirement, Jim continued to keep busy with numerous hobbies, including his orchard, his tree farm, various travels, following his favorite sports teams, and volunteering.
Jim and his wife moved to Green Bay in 2005, and he subsequently became a member of Messiah Ev. Lutheran Church, the Brown County Taxpayer's Association and the Green Bay Retired Men's Club.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, five children; Constance (Dennis) Christenson, Lisa Knutson, Andrea (Timothy Andre) Knutson, Elizabeth Knutson and Peter Knutson; five grandsons, Elliot (Gina), Eric (Ann), Justin (Becky), Corey (Rev. Jennifer) and Brandon (Kristen); four great-grandsons, and a great-great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Rebecca.
Visitation will be held at Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay Friday, May 9, 2014, from 5-8 PM. Visitation will continue at Forbes from 10-11 AM Saturday, May 10, with a funeral service beginning at 11 AM. The Rev. Stephen Sauer will be officiating. Burial with military honors will be conducted at Bayside Cemetery immediately following the service. Memorials may be given according to the donor's wishes.
