Blazei, John R.

John R. Blazei, 78, lifelong resident of Howard/Suamico, died suddenly at his home, Monday, July 8, 2013. He was born November 24, 1934, in Green Bay to Theodore and Frances (Dionne) Blazei.

On January 28, 1961 John married Patricia Blizniak at Assumption BVM Catholic Church in Pulaski. The things that John enjoyed most were travelling, his "obsession" with Zumba, and his special pets, including Buffy and Gus.

John and his brother, Carl owned and operated Blazei's Foods in Howard from 1957 to 1983, retiring due to health concerns.

He was very involved with many community services and was a very active member of many civic groups. John was a charter member, life member, and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #6279; charter member, life member, and past President of the Howard-Suamico Optimist Club; one of the founders of the Howard-Suamico Optimist Community Foundation; a volunteer for Bellin Hospital Critical Care Unit; member and past Treasurer of the Concerned Hearts Club; Co-founder and past President of the Howard-Suamico Emergency Rescue Squad; Honorary life member of the Bay Port Booster Club at Bay Port High School. John was also the chairman of many fund raising events including Special Olympics, D.A.R.E., YMCA, Howard-Suamico Library, NEW Zoo, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and many more. He was a very active member of the NEW Zoo Boosters and many of their committees. John was a longtime Treasurer for Assemblyman Karl Van Roy.

He is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Barb and Dana Erlandson, and their family, Nicholas, Lauren, and Ethan; Gail and Kim Nohr, and their family, Cody, Colin, and Katlyn; his brother and sisters and their spouses, Mary and Howard Baenen, Carl and Alice Blazei, Rosie and Bruce Brown; two sisters-in-law, Leona Ryba and Phyllis Betley; many nieces and nephews, and many, many friends.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, and infant son, Richard, and his parents.

Friends may call at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2597 Glendale Ave. (one quarter mile east of the corner of Cardinal Ln. and Glendale Ave.) from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Recitation by Howard Suamico Optimist Club of their Creed will be held at 4 p.m. Friends may also call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with Rev. John Bergstadt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family.
