Dr. Bill Putnam

Simpsonville

Dr. William Albert Putnam, 89, husband of JoAnn Putnam, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, March 22, 2014.

Born in Columbia, SC, he was the son of the late Albert L. and Pearl Huggins Putnam.

Bill, otherwise known as "Doc", proudly served his country in WW II in a special unit designed to provide cover and protection for downed pilots or others that found themselves in enemy territory. He attended Furman University, the University of Georgia, and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Southern Illinois School of Optometry. He served the vision needs of upstate residents for more than fifty years, and donated his time and skills to help children who otherwise did not have access to vision services. Throughout his life he loved the game of chess, and in the mid-sixties was a Master Chess Champion in SC. Doc also loved the outdoors and was fortunate to travel and explore many beautiful places throughout the US and Canada. It should also be said that he had a great sense of humor and never met a stranger. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children and their spouses,

Reverend Grover Putnam (Debbie), Michael G. Putnam, Linda Garland (Gene), Patricia Putnam, Denise Douglas (Stan), Elisa Harris (Fred), and Ginger Popp (Steve); his sister, Agnes P. Roberts; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services will be 12:00pm Wednesday, March 26, at Temple Baptist Church in Simpsonville with the Reverend Brett Aiken officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00am until service time at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials please be made to Temple Baptist Church, 213 W. Curtis Street, Simpsonville, SC 29680.
