Brenda Johnson Pennington Miles, of Greenville, passed away May 8, 2013.
She was born January 4, 1944 in Kinston, NC and was the adopted daughter of Roxie and Wilson Johnson.
She and her ex-husband James Miles have two sons James Melvin Miles, Jr., and Jeffrey Johnson Miles. She has two incredible daughters-in-law, Shelley Miles and Jennifer Miles.
The loves of her life were her family and her precious grandchildren, McKenzie Elizabeth Miles, Mary Kathryn Pennington Miles, Lucas Chandler Miles, James Melvin Miles, III, and Elena Katherine "Ellie Kate" Miles.
She was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church and was a devoted member of the Wednesday Morning Bible Study Group for ten years.
Her contributions to Greenville were the first co-chairman of the Greenville Legal Auxiliary, and co-chairman for the first drug abuse program in Greenville at Hughes Middle School.
As a former sixth grade school teacher, she taught in Chapel Hill, NC, the first year of integration and was the first homebound teacher in North Carolina. Brenda was an accomplished pianist, and as an instructor provided the gift of music to many. She was crowned Miss Kinston North Carolina and was a graduate of East Carolina University.
Brenda's passion in life was loving her family and feeding and clothing the homeless.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 12:30pm at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, officiated by Reverend Jerry Hill. Burial will follow in Graceland East Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00am - 12:00pm in the Orders Parlor at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, Crisis Ministries, 200 Buncombe Street, SC 29601.
