Dr. Carey S. Crantford, Sr. passed away Monday, March 11th. Born in Atlanta Georgia Professor Crantford spent the majority of his professional career on the faculty at Furman University. Dr. Crantford earned his Ph.D. from Tulane University and taught Spanish and German. He joined the Furman faculty in 1962 and served as Chairman of the Foreign Language Department until his retirement.
Teaching was Dr. Crantford's first passion. He blended his love for art, music, architecture, literature, history and pop culture into a unique platform for teaching foreign languages. An avid traveler, Dr. Crantford helped establish Furman's foreign study curriculums and led many semester aboard programs to Spain. Dr. Crantford served on a variety of internal university committees but always reveled in his work staging commencement exercises and other university celebrations. Quick with a joke or humorous story Dr. Crantford was always proud that his career spanned a period of extraordinary growth and accomplishment for the university.
After retirement Dr. Crantford remained an active part of the Furman community. He participated in the university's Life Long Learning programs. Dr. Crantford often spoke to community groups on numerous topics. His talks on the media, religion and Sephardic traditions attracted a loyal following.
Dr. Crantford's greatest pleasure was learning about the successes of former students. Hundreds of his students went on to pursue any number of careers including teaching. He was overwhelmed by the honor provided by a group of former students who established the Carey Shepard Crantford Endowed Chair in Modern Languages at Furman.
Dr. Crantford was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann Crantford. He is survived by their four children; Caren, Carey, Bennett, and Cathy and 10 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials can be made to the Carey Shepard Crantford Endowed Chair in Modern Languages, Furman Development Office, Furman University, 3300 Poinsett Hwy, Greenville, SC 29613. Cremation Society of South Carolina is serving Dr. Crantford's family.
