Garland Frank Huffman, Jr., 86, of 204 Wilmington Road, Greenville, SC, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2013 after a period of declining health.
Born in Burlington, NC, he was the son of the late Garland Frank Huffman, Sr. and Mamie Johnston Huffman.
Mr. Huffman graduated an honor student in 1943 from Riverside Military Academy of Gainesville, GA. He proudly served in the US Navy during World War II beginning in 1944. After receiving training in Bainbridge, MD, he was deployed in the Pacific Theater. He was sent to Tsingtao, China as a Radarman First Class and was attached to the Marine Corps where he tracked, assisted, and talked down Army Air Force pilots returning to base from air missions against the Japanese.
Following his service time, he continued his education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC and graduated in 1949 with a Business Degree in Commerce and made the Dean's List. He then joined the North Carolina Department of Revenue as an Auditor, and in 1959 started an Appliance Retail Business on West Davis St. in Burlington, NC. In 1965, he accepted a sales position with Westinghouse Electrical and was promoted to Territory Sales Manager. In 1969, he accepted a similar position with Kingsdown Bedding for which he was employed until his retirement in 2000.
Mr. Huffman touched many lives in both North and South Carolina as a vocalist and soloist with The First Christian Church of Burlington, NC, Buncombe Street United Methodist Church, and Mitchell Road Presbyterian Church of Greenville, SC. He sang baritone in the church choir, as well as at many weddings, funerals, and other events.
Mr. Huffman is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Christine Cranford Huffman, and spent a wonderful life with her and the rest of their family. He is also survived by sons Garland Frank Huffman III and wife, Judy, of Simpsonville, and Dr. John Christian Huffman and wife, Robyn, of Rocky Mount, NC; grandchildren, Wendy M. Huffman, Shane D. Huffman and wife, Cassie, and Michael C. Huffman; and great grandchild, Nicholas G. Gonske.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel. Entombment will take place at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Serenity Mausoleum.
