Marjorie Ussery Stokes

Seneca

Marjorie Ussery Stokes, 88, wife of James Porter Stokes, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at Lila Doyle Nursing Center.

For over fifty years, Sunday morning church services opened with majestic classical fanfare as organist Marjorie Ussery Stokes set the stage for worshippers to reverently prepare for the Lord's message, delivered by her husband of sixty- five years, James Porter Stokes.

Marjorie was born to the late Leroy and Senella Ussery, October 16, 1925, in Moultrie, Georgia. She graduated from Williston- Elko High School, received her Bachelor of Arts in Piano and Performing Arts from Limestone College, and a Masters of Reading from Clemson University. Marjorie Fields Ussery married James Porter Stokes on a beautiful spring day, May 12, 1949, in Greer, South Carolina. The young couple lived in Bethune and Blacksburg, South Carolina before relocating to Seneca, South Carolina in August of 1956.

Marjorie was Treasurer for the South Carolina Music Educators Association for many years. She taught choral music at Westminster High School, choral music and reading at West-Oak High School, and was always passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students. She worked diligently to leave no child behind and was loved, adored, and respected by her students.

Marjorie was an active member of Seneca and Trinity Baptist Churches where she actively played the organ, directed various choirs, and taught Sunday school. She was an avid gardener, antique collector, needle pointer, and loved her family and the quietness and nosiness of home.

Marjorie is survived by four children: Dr. James Porter Stokes II of Clinton, South Carolina, Mark Singleton Stokes of Greenville, South Carolina, David Thomas Stokes of Seneca, South Carolina, and daughter, Marjorie Nanelle Stokes Cook of Seneca, South Carolina.

She was "Mama" to her grandchildren, Dr. James Porter Stokes III, Joshua Preston Stokes, Dr. Erin Elizabeth Stokes, Samuel McMillan Stokes, Brent Keith Schipper, Cody Alan Schipper, Bradley Thomas Stokes, Nathaniel Andrew Stokes, Sarah Elizabeth Stokes, Necia Nanelle Cook, and Wallace Saxon Cook.

In addition to her grandchildren, she was great-grandmother to Joshua Preston, Porter William, Lukas James, and Ryals Elizabeth Stokes.

Visitation at the residence, 215 West South First Street, Seneca, SC 29678, from 4 - 6 p.m., Sunday, June 8, 2014.
