Meta Hollender Gallagher, of Westminster Retirement Home, 11 East Augusta Place, widow of Dr. Walter Neal Gallagher, died March 12, 2013. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota December 12, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Henriette Engel and August Hollender. A graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, she worked a number of years as the office manager in her husband's dental practice in Hazelton, PA, prior to his entering the United States Navy during World War II.
During her husband's career in the Navy, she raised their three children in many places including Boston, Philadelphia, Cuba and Italy. Most of their lives centered around the Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland where she enthusiastically contributed to the enrichment of the community through her work with the Navy Relief and the American Red Cross.
She moved to Greenville in 2003, where she continued to be actively involved in all that was happening around her, enriching the lives of the residents and staff at Westminster.
Meta leaves her two daughters, Dr. Kathleen Gallagher Oxner and her husband, Glenn Oxner of Greenville, SC, Dr. Nancy Gallagher O'Donoghue King and her husband, Dr. David King, of Greenville, SC, and a son Dr. Walter Neal Gallagher, Jr. and his wife, Cecilia Gallagher of Libertyville, IL.
In addition to her three children, her immediate family includes nine grandchildren, Dr. Kathleen Gallagher Samet of Chapel Hill, NC, John Joseph Gallagher, Jr. of Nashville, TN, Dr. J Morgan O'Donoghue of Sarasota, FL, Mary Adrienne O'Donoghue Sion of Normandy, France, Mary Coleman O'Donoghue of New York, NY, Neal Patrick Gallagher of Chicago, IL, Emily Elizabeth Gallagher of San Diego, CA, Erin Christine Gallagher of Chicago, IL, and Patrick Ryan Gallagher of Houston, TX. She also leaves 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Fort Myer Memorial Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery with burial following the service. The family will receive friends at the home of Kathleen and Glenn Oxner, 18 Woodland Way Circle, Greenville, SC, on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 6:00 pm.
