Donivan Paul Dempsey, Sr., 94, completed his life on earth to join his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
He was born in Greer, S.C., the son of the late Robert Rabbi and Louise Griffin Dempsey. Mr. Dempsey served in the U.S. Army during WWII in France and Germany. In 1960, Mr. Dempsey was active in the formation of Taylors Fire Department where he served for a total of 23 years and served as Chief for 13 years. A faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church, Greer, for 72 years, he served humbly with his gifts and talents, was a member of the Dewey Calvert Sunday School class and was honored as a "Life Deacon".
He was known for his kindness and caring spirit and set an example for his family, friends and co-workers as he always put his Lord first and prayed fervently.
Surviving are his loving wife of 74 years, Elizabeth Edwards Dempsey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Mary Dempsey of Travelers Rest and Roger Dempsey and Linda Chase of Boston, MA; one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Bruce Longshore of Dawsonville; GA; six grandchildren, Demps Dempsey (Kristy), Amy McCauley (Will), Brandon Longshore (Sydney), Kelli Longshore (Greg Dunham), Autumn Chase-Dempsey, Luke Chase-Dempsey; eight great-grandchildren, Megan, Duncan, Kate Dempsey, Mac, Mills, Libby McCauley, Reece and Riley Longshore; a sister, Marie Bridwell and her husband Perry; a brother, Robert Dempsey; a brother-in-law, Dan Cunningham and a sister-in-law, Margaret Edwards.
Mr. Dempsey was predeceased by a sister, Grace.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday at Fairview Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Tom Burns and Rev. James Crocker. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be members of The Taylors Fire Department.
Honorary escort will be the members of The Taylors Fire Department and The Dewey Calvert Sunday School class.
Visitation will be held 12:30-1:45 p.m. Friday at Fairview Baptist Church.
