Greenville

William B. James of Greenville, departed this life June 23, 2013 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Greenville on March 17, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph Herbert James and Mabel Adams James. Bill graduated from Greenville High School in 1943. After graduation, he joined the US Army and served in the Pacific and European Theatres during WWII. Following his military service, Bill attended Furman University and the University of South Carolina, earning a Juris Doctorate degree in 1951. Bill worked in several prestigious law firms before opening a private law practice specializing in real estate. He was a well-respected and dedicated attorney who served our community for 50 years. From a young age, Bill was very civic-minded and even ran for State Representative in the 1950's. He served as President of numerous organizations including the Augusta Road Kawanis Club, the Paladin Club, and Botany Woods Homeowners Association. Throughout his life, Bill was an active member in his churches including Earle Street Baptist Church, Edwards Road Baptist Church, Central Baptist Church and Northgate Baptist Church where he most recently served as deacon and teacher.

In his early years, Bill enjoyed camping with his family and later became an avid sports fan, particularly of the Furman Paladins. As President of the Paladin Club, Bill invested time to get to know each athlete personally and was an enthusiastic season ticket holder for many years. Bill was a kind, generous, loving person who was considered a true gentleman by everyone who met him. He enjoyed meeting and socializing with friends, neighbors and classmates.

Surviving are his loving wife, Linda Clayton Knight James, son William Albert James of Landsford Canal State Park, son Joseph Herbert James II and wife Terri of Greenville, daughter Sally Uhimchuk and husband George of Greenville, daughter by marriage Lea Knight Pinion and husband David of Atlanta, and sister, Martha Hammond of Atlanta. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sara Elizabeth Pratt James and brothers, John Albert James and Joseph Herbert James Jr. He is also survived by grandchildren, Julie James, Emily James, Laura James, Andrew James, Beth Uhimchuk, Allison Pinion, Lauren Pinion, and Megan Pinion as well as his loyal, faithful dog, Daisy Mae.

The family would like to extend special appreciation to Providence Care Hospice for their loving care and support.

Services will be held 2 pm Wednesday in The Mackey Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be held 12:45 - 1:45 pm. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
