Bellows, Jr., Howard A.
Howard Arthur Bellows, Jr., 76, died on March 20, 2014, at the Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home in Greenwich, CT, following an extended illness. A longtime resident of Greenwich, he was the beloved husband of Mary Josephine "Jody" Boyd Bellows.
In addition to his wife, Arthur is survived by his children: daughter, Maffitt Vodrey Bellows; son, Alexander Scott Bellows and his wife, Erin; daughter, Hillary Bellows Picardi and her husband, Preston; daughter, Jennifer Pacheteau Bellows, and two grandsons, Logan Bellows Picardi and Malcolm Arthur Bellows. He is also survived by a daughter, Heather Harvey Kremer, her husband, Jurgen, and granddaughter, Frejya Kremer.
A sister, Judith Bellows Allen, predeceased him.
Born March 10, 1938, in New York City, Arthur was the son of the late Howard Arthur and Rita Maffitt Bellows. His early years were spent in South Orange, NJ, before moving to Ohio with his family. He attended Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, OH, graduating in 1956; Princeton University, graduating in 1960. He then earned an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1964.
He served as a Lieutenant, JG, in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier from 1960 to 1962.
In 1967 Arthur became a founder, CEO and Chairman of The Triangle Corporation, maker of hand tools. In 1995 he joined Audits and Surveys Worldwide, Inc. as President, COO and Director. In 1999 he founded Braeburn Associates.
Arthur also served on the Board of Directors of Hexcel Corp., Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc., First Communications, Inc., United Video Cablevision, Inc. and was a founder and Chairman of United Media, Inc.
Arthur was active in many educational institutions, having served from 1979 to 2006 on the Board of Western Reserve Academy as Trustee and as Chairman from 2000 to 2006. He was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the University Cottage Club of Princeton University and was the Harvard Business School Class of 1964 Historian.
Arthur was a Trustee of the Greenwich Hospital, the Greenwich Country Day School, the Round Hill Community Church, as well as a Director of the Boys and Girls Club, the Arch Street Teen Center and Chairman of the Republican Round Table.
An avid sportsman, Arthur enjoyed many sports at many clubs over the years. He loved skiing the black diamond trails on Vail Mountain, and entertaining the guys on his annual "Male Vail" trip. He played doubles squash, tennis, golf, and looked forward to his early morning swims in the summer.
In Greenwich, he was a member of the Round Hill Club, the Blind Brook Club, the Field Club and the Stanwich Golf Club. He was also a member of the McArthur Golf Club in Hobe Sound, FL, the Eagle Springs and Game Creek Club in Vail, CO, as well as the Racquet and Tennis Club, the River Club and the Links Club in New York City. In Southampton, NY, he belonged to the Bathing Corporation, Meadow Club and the Shinnecock Golf Club. As a member of YPO and CEO, he and Jody traveled with these organizations for many years.
But, best about Arthur was his love of life. He could truly light up a room with his sense of fun, his sharp wit and engaging humor. He was always eager for a new trip, a new adventure, new friends, a new dance step…and his old favorite, the "chicken hop". He was especially supportive of his family and his old friends. He was a gentleman, with a twinkle in his eye and mischief always there for all to enjoy. He will be missed greatly.
A Family Service was held in Greenwich at the Round Hill Community Church on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The Internment Service was held at Riverview Cemetery in East Liverpool, Ohio.
A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Church in Greenwich at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014, with a Reception to follow at the Round Hill Club.
