Clarkson III, James A.
James A. "Jim" Clarkson III, passed away on April 23, 2014 at age 72. Mr. Clarkson grew up in Riverside, Connecticut, the son of James A. Clarkson Jr. and Bernice Burns Clarkson. He graduated from Greenwich Country Day School in 1957 and from The Choate School in 1960. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University in 1964, a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia University in 1966, and his law degree from the New York University School of Law in 1969.
He then joined the Securities Exchange Commission, retiring from the agency in 2010 after more than four decades of SEC service, including the last 32 years as the Director of Regional Office Operations in the Enforcement Division. Mr. Clarkson periodically served as an Acting Regional Director in several of the SEC's regional offices over the years - most recently in 2008 and 2009 at the New York Regional Office. Over his last several years at the Agency, Mr. Clarkson provided technical assistance and training on enforcement and market oversight issues to various international securities regulators - including those in Russia, China, Hong Kong, and India. He also provided assistance to these countries regarding the development and management of regional office networks of national securities regulators.
During his career, Mr. Clarkson was awarded the SEC's Distinguished Service Award, which is the highest honor the Commission bestows on members of its staff. He also received a Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service, the Chairman's Award for Excellence, and the SEC's EEO Award.
He is survived by his wife Jan Nagel Clarkson of Kensington, MD, son Blair Grant Clarkson of Silver Spring, MD (Kimberly Clarkson), daughter Brooke Dawn Clarkson of Arlington, VA (Brian Churney), two grandchildren, mother-in-law Grace W. Nagel of Kilmarnock, VA, and brother Geoffrey Clarkson of Greenwich, CT.
