O'Neal, James J.
James J. O'Neal, longtime Rye resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 25th surrounded by his family. Son of Elizabeth Dooley O'Neal and Charles C. O'Neal, Jim was born in St. Louis, August 1, 1921. Sisters Elizabeth Cramer, Florence Burns and Ellen Tipton predeceased him. Jim attended St. Louis U. High and then Notre Dame University where he became Senior Class President, and winner of the Notre Dame DOME Award. He enrolled in the US Naval Officer School during college and served during WWII on the USS Canfield in the Sea of Japan. Jim married Mary Tierney of St. Louis and is survived by his seven children: Sally Maloney of Greenwich CT, Ellen Walsh of Wellesley Hills, MA, Mary Davidson of Rye NY, Kathy Wasilko of Greenwich CT, Peggy Shepard of Rye NY, Nancy Holloway of Springfield MA, and Jim O'Neal Jr. of Stamford, CT. 19 Grandchildren and 24 Great Grandchildren. He was the loving and devoted husband for 68 years of the late Mary Tierney O'Neal who predeceased him in 2010. Jim cared for her through a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease and kept her at home to be with her throughout. Jim had a long and successful career in advertising beginning in St. Louis which brought him to New York in 1955 to work for D'Arcy and Campbell-Ewald as a top executive at the firms. He also served as Chairman of D'Arcy International. Jim worked as the lead executive on major national and international accounts such as Olin, Bermuda, Lufthansa, GMAC and General Motors, before retiring from Campbell-Ewald as Group Executive Vice President in 1986. Jim was a devout Catholic and attended Mass daily, serving for many years as the Daily Sacristan at the Chapel at St. Vincent's, Harrison, NY. He served on many Fundraising committees, notably with the Convent of the Sacred Heart as Chair of the Building committee in the early 70's. He was also a Knight of the Order of Malta. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 30 at The Church of the Resurrection, Boston Post Road, Rye, NY at 10am followed by a private family burial.
