Costa, Rosario
WATR-AM ITALIAN RADIO SHOW HOST, Rosario "Sarino" Costa, age 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at his home. He was the devoted husband of Adeline (Rosa) Costa. Sarino was born on January 15, 1925 in Messina, Sicily, Italy, son of the late Giuseppe and Giusseppina (Giordano) Costa. Sarino dropped out of high school to join his brothers and enlist in the Italian army during World War II. After the war, he was employed by the Gazzetta del Sud and was responsible for managing the daily distribution of this newspaper. Sarino married Adeline in Italy in 1958 and then immigrated to Waterbury, where Adeline was born and raised. From 1959 until his retirement in 1987, he worked in Scovill Manufacturing. During that same period, he attended night school, learned English, became a citizen and earned his GED. Sarino started taking classes at the University of Connecticut and at Mattatuck in the early 80's and always enjoyed learning and improving himself. Bored with retirement, Sarino was coaxed by his friends in the Italian community to start a radio show. For the next 21 years, Sarino hosted Carosello Italiano on Waterbury's airwaves. He also was an active member in many Italian organizations: the Sons of Italy, UNICO National and the Lega Siciliana Social Club. He served as President of the Lega Siciliana for many years, was honored by the City of Waterbury, and selected Mayor for the Day on Columbus Day in 2000. He started the Sal Terenzo Scholarship Fund and spearheaded the Sergio Franchi Foundation NIAF Scholarship which is in its 19th year. He additionally raised funds for the Padre Arturo Foundation which helps homeless children in Italy. Sarino also served as the commissioner for the Waterbury Parking Authority for many years. A devout Catholic, he spent weekends attending mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Church where he was a longtime communicant. Sarino will be sorely missed on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to Adeline, his wife of 55 years, Sarino is survived by his daughter Josie and her husband Mark Weller and grandsons, Zack and Matthew Weller of Greenwich, and son Joseph Costa and his wife Robin of Waterbury. Sarino also leaves his sister, Maria Lascari of Italy and many loving nieces and nephews, in both Italy and the US. He was predeceased by brothers Nunzio, Lorenzo, Marcello, Gianni and Angelo Costa, all from Italy. His funeral will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 9:00am from Maiorano Funeral Home, 95 Willow St., Waterbury to Our Lady of Lourdes Church for a Mass at 10:00am.
