Acel Don Wimmer
"Together Again"
South Ogden - Acel Don Wimmer passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living from complications due to a broken hip. He was the first child of six born to Acel Forrest Wimmer and Dora Little Wimmer on Dec. 1, 1919 in Neola, Duchesne County, Utah.
Don was educated in Logan, Utah graduating from Logan High School in 1938. That summer he met MarDell Lewis while she worked at the Winget's Ice Cream Shop. They were married in Preston, Idaho Sept. 2, 1939 and solemnized their marriage in the Logan Temple in 1941.
Don learned sewing machine repair at Wimmer's Sewing Machine store, the Logan-based business his father opened in the 1920s. Don opened his first sewing machine business in Rexburg, Idaho in 1940. After his daughter Connie was born in 1942, they moved to Ogden where his sons were born, Dennis in 1943 and Ferron in 1944.
In 1945, Don was inducted in the U.S. Army Infantry at Fort Douglas, Utah. He served in the Ordinance Depot in the Philippines and was discharged in 1946. Jobs were scarce after WWII, but Don always had one. He made boxes in an Ogden factory, inspected and repaired parachutes at Hill AFB, switched rail for Ogden Union Railway and Depot Company, and sold insurance. In 1951, his health prompted a move Washington State where he was a fireman in the Bremerton Fire Department. In 1956, the family returned to Ogden where Don Began distributing Harper Brushes. In 1958 he opened his last and most successful business, Wimmer Janitorial Supplies Co. Don retired in 1984 with loyal customers throughout the Wasatch Front.
Don was a life-long active member of the LDS Church, serving multiple positions in several wards for 51 years. Don and MarDell served a two-year Family History Mission in Salt Lake City.
Don was preceded in death by his wife, MarDell in 2006; his parents, Acel and Dora Wimmer; siblings, Rex, Paul and Arlene (who were children of Acel and his first wife); sisters, Emma and Opal and brother Reed (who were children of Acel and Dora).
Don is survived by his three children, Connie Thorson (Curly), Brigham City; Dennis Wimmer (Ann), South Ogden; and Ferron Wimmer (Stephanie), Riverdale. Don has 13 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren with one on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Doreen Larson (Emery), Salt Lake City; and his brother, Wayne Wimmer (Joanne), Logan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 at Myers Ogden Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd. with a viewing prior to the service from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment in the Ogden City Cemetery.
