Merrill C. Daines
1921-2014
Logan - Merrill Clyde Daines peacefully passed away May 8, 2014. He was born September 9, 1921 to Joseph Clyde and Edna Merrill Daines. He graduated from Logan High School where he was the Senior Class President. He married Betty Turner Daines on August 12, 1944. She passed away on June 20, 2012.
After high school he attended Utah State University where he joined Sigma Chi Fraternity. During his senior year at USU he transferred to the University of Utah to complete his senior year of college and first year of medical school. After finishing medical school he joined the Navy as a doctor during World War II. After the war, Merrill and Betty resided in SLC where he did is residency, and their four children were born. After residency they moved back to Logan to start his medical practice in Cache Valley.
Merrill opened his practice in 1951 and tirelessly worked for the community until he retired in 1988. He was still known to make house calls after he retired. Merrill was President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Commerce, served on the Boy Scouts of America, Utah State Medical Board, President of the Utah State Heart Association, Logan Regional Hospital Board of Directors, and Board of Directors at Sunshine Terrace, Medical Director of Sunshine Terrace, USU Quarterback Club President, President and member of the Logan School Board, Old Main Society. He was an avid Rotarian, where he served as chapter and district president. Merrill was a model citizen, even after his retirement he received the Citizen of the Year Award in 2012.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held various leadership positions over his life. He was a temple worker, branch president, and on the high council.
Merrill enjoyed gardening, skiing, golf and reading.
He is preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister, grandson and eternal companion Betty. He is survived by his four children, Dianne (Dilworth) Strasser, Merrill Jr (Connie) Daines, Karen (James) Wood, David (Maribeth) Daines, 19 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.
There will be a viewing Thursday, May 15, from 11:30-12:30 p.m. followed by a funeral at 1 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center Street, Logan. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net.
