Don A. Belz, age 81, of 1605 23rd St. Two Rivers, died early Wednesday morning, July 3, 2013, surrounded by his family, at the Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.
Don was born June 1, 1932 in Two Rivers, a son of the late Sylvester and Jeanette A. (Johannes) Belz. He attended Two Rivers Public Schools, and was a 1951 graduate of Washington High School. He then served his country with the United States Coast Guard. On October 2, 1954, he married Geraldine Lemanchek at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Don was a 27-year veteran of the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Department, serving under six sheriffs during his years of employment. He began as a process server, moved up to position of detective and was later a lieutenant and a captain of the detective unit. In 1987, Don was named deputy inspector after a merger of the department's patrol and investigative divisions was instituted. Don was also the first member of the Sheriff's Department to become a certified scuba diver.
After retirement, Don pursued his hobby as a well known Gunsmith who worked out of his home in Two Rivers; he also enjoyed years of traveling and camping; he loved to hunt and fish; and was a certified hunter safety instructor for over 10-years. He was a life-member of the Manitowoc Rifle & Pistol Club; Manitowoc County Sheriff's Association; National Rifle Association; and a member of the VFW Post #1248 and American Legion Post #165 of Two Rivers.
Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; one daughter & son-in-law, Marie and John LaFond, Two Rivers; three grandchildren, John LaFond & fiancé, Andrea, Steven LaFond, Krista (Preston) Radandt; three great grandchildren, Brice, Evan, and Braydon, and a little great granddaughter due in November. He is further survived by a brother & two sisters-in-law, Dennis and Janet Belz, Two Rivers, and Leah Lemanchek of Two Rivers; one niece, Amanda Belz; one nephew, Matt (Angie) Belz; one great-niece and one great-nephew. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Emil and Evelyn Lemanchek; his son, David A. Belz, July 9, 2012, and a brother-in-law, Bob Lemanchek.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, 3218 Tannery Rd., Two Rivers. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Peter Mitchell, with burial to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Military graveside rites will be accorded by members of the VFW Post #1248 and American Legion Post #165 of Two Rivers.
The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church after 8:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of mass at 10:00 a.m. There will be no Friday evening visitation.
