He was born in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to Norman and Clara (Springer) Paulus. He lived there until the Great Depression led his father to move the family to Wabeno, Wis., for work. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on a LST in the Pacific Theater of World War II. After honorable discharge he attended the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis Mn and eventually retired from Hamilton Industries with over 30 years of service.

In 1956, he married Anita Sheahan at St Patricks Catholic Church in Maple Grove, Wisconsin. Shortly there after he was inducted as an honorary Irishman by the Sheahan clan. He and Anita were married for 57 years and raised 4 children together.
