News Death Notice
GATTERMEYER, Marcella Helen was born October 8, 1917 in Clifton, Kentucky and passed away August 16, 2013 in Menifee (Sun City), California at the age of 95. She is preceded in death by her mother Helen, father Leonard, and siblings Evelyn, Florence, Robert, and Dick Gattermeyer and many life-long friends. She is survived by her siblings Laverne Schultheiss, Janet Phillips, Virginia (Mike) Brozowski, Shirley Brozowski, Russell Gattermeyer, and Gene (Mary) Gattermeyer. She was also a dear aunt to many nieces and nephews. Marcella attended St. Ann's grade school, graduated from Notre Dame High School (Hamilton, Ohio) in 1935 and received her RN from Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati in 1938. She volunteered for Red Cross service and soon after was transferred to Fort Ord in April 1941. Marcella was one of the first 15 nurses in the civilian draft and a decision was made that all nurses would be commissioned Second Lieutenant. She was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, and Leyte, Philippines. She performed her nursing duties in a field hospital under battlefield conditions and her military citations included the Bronze Star. Marcella lived in Los Angeles and worked at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and Burbank Medical Clinic for many years before moving to Peoria, Arizona and back to Sun City, California. She made many friends along the way and traveled the world with her life-long friends Ruth and Doug Dare and their family. She was an active member of Catholic Daughters for many years. She also knitted hundreds of booties and caps for various charities. Marcella will be dearly missed. Her family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 3:00-6:00PM, Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at the Evans Brown Sun City Mortuary, 27010 Encanto Drive, Sun City, California. Catholic Funeral Mass of Christian Burial Rite will be the following morning, Wednesday, August 28, 2013, 10:00AM at St. Vincent Ferrer Catholic Church in Sun City, California. Committal Services with Military Honors performed by the US Army will follow at 12:15PM, Wednesday, August 28 at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
