A. Harry W. Olsen Jr. Obituary


A. Harry W. Olsen Jr., age 75, loving husband for over forty-five years of Judith (Newcomb) Olsen, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford with his family by his side. Harry was born in Manchester on May 9, 1938, the only child of A. Harry W. Olsen Sr. and Esther S.M. (Dondero) Olsen. He was raised in Coventry, served in the CT. Air National Guard as a crew chief, and retired as a Lieutenant in charge of the third shift after working for thirty-seven years at the Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company Fire Department. He started and was the owner and operator of the Manchester Fire Extinguisher Company for more than twenty-five years, and also enjoyed working part-time for the Holmes Funeral Home for over twenty years. Even with his busy schedule he never missed one of his children's softball games, Little League games, or dance recitals. Harry was very involved in community service and organizations. He was a former fire chief of the North Coventry Volunteer Fire Dept. He was member of the 8th Utilities District Fire Dept. CO. 4, served on the Board of Directors of the 8th District for two terms, and was on the committee that built the new fire house for the 8th District. He was a fifty year Mason and was a member of Hartford Evergreen Lodge #88. He was a member of the Sphinx Shriners for over fifty years, served as Potentate in 2001, started the Sphinx False Alarmers in 2001, and was also a member. Harry was also the Omar Shrine Club president in 1995 and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a past Exalted Ruler two times of the Rockville Elks Lodge #1359, a member of the Windsor Elks Lodge #2060, and a member of the Manchester Army & Navy Club. Along with his wife Judy, he is survived by a son and daughter, William D. Olsen and his wife Aimee of Coventry, and Amy (Olsen) Rovegno and her husband Howard of Manchester; his precious granddaughter, Brianna Rovegno, who he loved very much, and his canine companion Daisy, who he took for a walk every day and was his friend. A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10, at 10:00 AM at the Second Congregational Church of Coventry, 1746 Boston Turnpike, (Rts. 6 & 44) Coventry. Burial will follow in the Center Cemetery in Coventry. Visiting hours are Friday, May 9, from 2 PM to 4 PM and 6 PM to 9 PM at the Holmes Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester with a Masonic service to be held at 6 PM and an Elks service to be held at 7 PM.
