Abraham S. WAKSMAN Obituary

WAKSMAN, Abraham S.

Abraham S. Waksman passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on Wednesday, (February 13, 2013) in the company of his family. Abraham was a resident of Seabury Retirement Community since 2009, having found a wonderful and accepting home near his family following the passing of his wife, Anita in 2008. Abraham was born in Piotrkow, Poland and was raised by a combination of his older siblings Majer and Golda and the Jewish Orphanage in Piotrkow. He survived the Holocaust along with Majer and his sister Mania, but lost his siblings Moishe and Golda. He immigrated to New York in 1951 and built a long career upon his unique abilities as a cabinetmaker. Abraham married Anita Sirota in 1958, lived in The Bronx and then Spring Valley, NY. After retirement in 1995, they relocated to Sunrise, FL where they enjoyed the weather and company of many friends. Despite the lack of a formal education, Abraham quickly became fluent in English (adding this to his fluency in several other languages) and developed a keen interest in and amazing understanding of global and local politics. He was a voracious reader. His observations and commentary remained astute and accurate to his last days. Abraham was an avid baseball fan and fisherman, but he enjoyed nothing more than playing poker with his friends for any stakes. Abraham is survived by his two children, Larry Waksman and his wife Donna of South Windsor; Melissa Waksman and Wayne Fonteix of Hampton, NJ; grandchildren, Benjamin and Elyse Waksman, as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews around the world. Special thanks and appreciation go to his wonderful healthcare team of Dr. Cohen, Dr. Kosack, and the staffs at St. Francis and Seabury.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Feb. 17, 10 a.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, with burial to follow at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ. Shiva will be observed at Larry and Donna's home on Monday & Tuesday, Feb. 18 and 19 from 6-8 p.m., with services at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seabury Charitable Foundation, 200 Seabury Dr., Bloomfield CT 06002 or Congregation Beth Ahm, 362 Palisado Ave.,Windsor CT 06095.
