MURPHY, Albert Gibney "Gib"

Albert Gibney "Gib" Murphy, of Shelter Harbor, Westerly, RI died Saturday at home following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 81, the son of Austin Murphy and Ethel Murphy. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Diane Murphy; as well as three children, Joshua Murphy and his wife Alma, Deirdre, and Justin. Their mother, Mimi Beggs, also survives. He is also survived by his two stepdaughters, Jennifer VanBelle and Sarah Sykes, and their husbands, Ron VanBelle and Charles Sykes, and grandchildren Haley, Lily and Charlie Sykes and Nick and Thomas VanBelle. Gib grew up in Pawcatuck, lived through the 1938 Hurricane, and then moved to Buffalo, NY with his family. He was a 1953 graduate of Dartmouth College, and was commissioned a 1st LT in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955, and graduated from UConn Law School in 1958. He spent 35 years as a trial attorney in Hartford, and was a partner in Webber, Jacobs and Murphy. He served as Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Hartford from 1960-1978. In 1990 he became a full-time mediator and arbitrator. He worked until the fall of 2010 when his illness would no longer allow it. He also dedicated his time to the Hartford community as an active member of the Democratic party, a Little League coach, literacy volunteer, inner city chauffeur to and from Rago-Coco Little League, the West End Players, and a standing and active contributor to the Adajian's Club.
A visiting hour will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce Street, Westerly, RI, immediately followed by a Funeral Service in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Burial will be private.
