SULLIVAN. Arthur D. Arthur D. Sullivan, 80, beloved husband of Virginia (Sullivan) Sullivan, of West Hartford, died peacefully Sunday, March 16, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, NY, the son of the late Daniel and Kathryn (Dooley) Sullivan, he made his home in Hawley, PA for 23 years, moving to West Hartford in 2013. Arthur graduated from Brooklyn College with both a BA in History and a Masters Degree in Social Science. He later obtained a PhD. in Educational Administration from Nova University. His career was devoted to the field of education. He began his career as a high school teacher, where he taught social studies at Walt Whitman High School in Huntington, NY for approximately 10 years. He then moved into school administration, where he served on the Board of Cooperative Educational Services on Long Island, NY. During that time, he devoted his efforts to developing diverse and rich curriculum so that students would be academically challenged and offered the opportunity to enrich their lives with areas of study such as art and philosophy. Arthur loved his country and voluntarily served in the US Marine Corps, earning the rank of Captain. Arthur was a hardworking, disciplined and natural leader, as demonstrated not only by his career and military service, but also by his leadership of many volunteer and charity organizations, where he gladly gave of his time and talent to help them. As an example, Arthur was instrumental in helping the volunteer fire and ambulance company of Hawley, PA attain a tax exempt status so they could raise necessary funds to buy needed equipment. Most importantly, Arthur was a faithful, caring and loving husband and father. Everyone who met him knew sensed his extraordinary compassion and concern for others. He will be deeply missed by many, and is survived by his wife Virginia of 56 years, as well as his loving children: Virginia Gilmour and her husband Dan of West Hartford, Kathleen Kelton of Brewster, NY, Joan Sullivan and her husband John of Philadelphia, PA, and Arthur Sullivan Jr., of Forest Hills, NY. He also leaves behind his brother, Edgar Sullivan, and his sister-in-law, Bess Sullivan, of Scotch Plains, NJ; his four grandchildren, Danielle and Ryan Gilmour, Jonathan and Michael Kelton; and his two nieces and nephew, Patricia, Daniel and Rose Marie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, (March 20, 2014) at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main St., West Hartford. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford. Calling hours are Wednesday (March 19) from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the Molloy Funeral Home, 906 Farmington Ave., West Hartford.
