Austin D. Drakes Obituary


Austin Drakes, 66, passed away peacefully on February 1, 2014 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut with his family by his side. Austin was born on May 10, 1947 in St. Thomas, Barbados. Austin was employed by Colt's Manufacturing Company from 1966 until 2013, interrupted only by his enlistment into the United States Army when he was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Austin was a wonderful, loving husband and father and was a beloved member of his extended family and community. To know Austin was to love him, and even those who knew him only for a brief time felt themselves enriched by his caring nature, his sense of humor, his generosity and his positive attitude. He will be deeply missed. He leaves to mourn his precious wife of 43 years, Yvette, daughters Gail and Diane Drakes, his siblings Kenrick and Roosevelt Drakes, Gloria Brathwaite, and a host of family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Goulbourne and Oneata Drakes and stepmother Rita Drakes. Austin's funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 10 a.m. at North United Methodist Church, 1205 Albany Ave in Hartford. His family will receive friends on Friday, February 14 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at All Faith Memorial Chapel, 90 John Fitch Blvd. (Route 5) in South Windsor and also from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the church prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery in Bloomfield. Sympathy flowers can be directed to All Faith Memorial Chapel.
