Barton F. Smith Obituary

Barton F. Smith, 99, of New Britain, husband of Elizabeth "Lorayne" (Talbot) Smith, passed away Thursday (January 23, 2014) at UConn Medical Center in Farmington. A lifelong New Britain resident, Bart was a graduate of New Britain High School, Class of 1934, and was employed by the New Britain National Bank for 43 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in New Britain; the Stanley Golf Course Men's Club and the New Britain Elk's Lodge # 957. Bart was a kind, humble and gentle man; a friend to all. He was an avid golfer all of his life and a loyal Red Sox fan. Bart never missed a chance to watch his UConn men's and women's basketball games. But most of all, he loved his family and friends, and took great pleasure in the time they spent together. Besides Lorayne, his beloved wife of 69 years, he is survived by his devoted daughter, Ann-Elizabeth Ducharme and her husband Bruce of Farmington; two loving grandchildren, Barton Ducharme and his wife Katie of New Canaan; and Alexandra Ducharme of Farmington; several nieces and nephews. Bart was predeceased by a brother, Delbert "Diggy" Smith. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday 11 AM at St Francis of Assisi Church, 1755 Stanley Street, New Britain, CT 06053. (Please go directly to the church). There are no calling hours. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Church. Bart's family would like to thank Dr. Kiki Nissen for her years of exceptional care and kindness. They extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff on the 6th floor at the UConn Medical Center. Their kindness and skilled care will never be forgotten. The Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain is assisting with arrangements. Please share a memory or note of sympathy with Bart's family at www.carlsonfuneralhome.com
