Carolyn J. Fliss Obituary

Carolyn J. Fliss, 81, of Bristol, widow of Robert J. Fliss, Sr., passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, May 1, 2014. Born in New Britain on September 23, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Mildred (Weare) and Arthur P. Hayward. She worked for many years at the Aetna and Cigna Insurance companies where she retired as a claims processor. Carolyn was a member of Saint Matthew Church in Forestville, was active in the Woman's Auxiliary for the Forestville Boys' Club and was a member of the New Britain Elks Lodge. Carolyn was a sports enthusiast and could be found on the sidelines of all of her children and grandchildren's games. Carolyn loved to travel and also enjoyed creating ceramics. Playing cards with family and friends was also a favorite pastime, but most of all she was happiest with her family, including her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Robert J. Fliss, Jr. and wife Joan of Burlington; daughters Susan J. DeSimone and husband Lawrence of Bristol; Linda S. Martinelli and her predeceased husband David of Bristol; brothers Dudley Hayward and wife Sandy of Florida; Bradley Hayward and wife Linda of Bristol; sister Marlene Calderone and husband James of Florida; grandchildren Alicia and husband Arthur Cohen, Caryn Martinelli and husband Michael Mahlis; Julie, Benjamin and Katey DeSimone, and Sarah Fliss; great grandchildren Hannah, Zoey and Lily Mahlis, Maria, David and Alice Cohen; and many nieces and nephews. Carolyn's family is very grateful to the wonderful staff at the Arbor Rose and Jerome Home for their unending kindness and excellent care that was provided throughout Carolyn's five year stay. Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014, beginning 8:00 a.m. at O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Forestville/Bristol. The funeral will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the funeral home and will proceed to St. Matthew Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Committal service and interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, 120 Smalley St., New Britain.
