KURKER, Charles, Jr.
Charles Kurker, Jr., 83, of South Windsor, formerly of East Hartford, beloved husband of the late Mary (Gabriel) Kurker, died suddenly Saturday (June 23, 2012) at Manchester Memorial Hospital, Manchester. Born in Boston, MA on May 29, 1929, son of the late Charles Kurker, Sr., and Wedad (Rawan) Kurker, he had lived in East Hartford for 52 years, before moving to South Windsor two years ago. Charles received his undergraduate degree from Northeastern University; attended Harvard University and was employed by the State of Connecticut as an engineer for the Department of Environmental Protection, retiring. He enjoyed his devoted family and adoring grandchildren, board games, gardening and earlier, tennis and golf. He was a member of the Civitan Club, East Hartford and was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Hartford where he was a past Sunday School Teacher and Head of the Sunday School. Charles is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Kurker-Stewart and her husband Randy from Glastonbury; son Raymond Kurker and his wife Joyce from South Windsor, and son Richard Kurker and his wife Debbie from East Hartford. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Chris and his wife Karen, Nicole, Devon, Kate, Sara, Olivia, Rick and Mike. He is also survived by three siblings, Edward Kurker and wife Laurice, Joseph Kurker and wife Helen, sister Mary Abdelahad; and several nieces and nephews. A special thank you to his caregiver Mervene and the staff at Emeritus.
The funeral will be held, Thursday at 11 a.m. at the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 433 Fairfield Ave., Hartford. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. His family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-9 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Road, South Windsor. A Trisagion service will be held on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
