Donald George Goranson Sr. Obituary

Donald George Goranson, Sr., 96, of Covenant Village in Cromwell and formerly of Lynn Road in Bristol, beloved husband for 72 years of Ruth (Palmberg) Goranson, died on Tuesday, July 8, following several months of declining health. He was the son of Swedish immigrants, the late Emil and Elsie (Nelson) Goranson. Born on February 28, 1918, at his childhood home in Forestville, Mr. Goranson was a resident of Bristol until 1989, when he and his wife moved to the Covenant Village of Cromwell retirement community. The Goransons also had been summer residents of Ogunquit, Maine for more than 30 years. A 1936 graduate of Bristol High School, Goranson was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft radar and radio technician. His 39-year career at both the Bristol and Meriden plants of the New Departure-Hyatt Division of General Motors involved work in the manufacturing, quality control and supervisory areas, rising to the rank of assistant superintendent in charge of the Perfex Department, where bearings for aircraft engines were produced. In most recent years, Mr. Goranson was a member of Hilltop Covenant Church in Cromwell. For the previous 90 years he was raised in and served as a very active member of Trinity Covenant Church of Plainville. He was a former Sunday School superintendent, church chairperson and was honored for being a 70-year choir member. Goranson was able to share vivid recollections of the day in September of 1942 that a tornado moved through Forestville and destroyed the church at its original location near the intersection of Washington and Camp Streets. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and also enjoyed both fishing off the rocky coast of Maine and vegetable gardening. In addition to his wife, Mr. Goranson is survived by a son, Donald Goranson, Jr. and his wife, Margaret Goranson of Bristol; a daughter, Sandra Benson and her husband, Rev. John Benson, also of Bristol; five grandchildren, David Goranson of Vernon, Jennifer Garretson of Las Vegas, NV, Sarah Benson of Herndon, VA, Laurel Borter of Kenosha, WI, and Kristen Hair of Reston, VA; five great-grandchildren, Thomas, Lars and Markus Garretson of Las Vegas, NV; Benson Borter of Kenosha, WI; and Margaret Hair of Reston, VA; and a sister, Phyllis Nelson of Cromwell. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Holt of Fairfield, and a brother, Rev. Evan Goranson of Oak Lawn, IL. Friends may call at the Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Avenue in Bristol, on Friday, July 11, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of Mr. Goranson's life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, in a memorial service to be held at Hilltop Covenant Church, 82 Hicksville Road (corner of Route 372/West Street) in Cromwell. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Benevolent Care Fund of Covenant Village of Cromwell, 52 Missionary Road, Cromwell, CT 06416, or to Hilltop Covenant Church. The family wishes to extend it heartfelt thanks for the wonderful care Mr. Goranson received from members of the nursing staffs of both Covenant Village and Franciscan Home and Hospice Care.
