Edward J. Allen Obituary

Edward Joseph Allen, 79, of Lebanon, CT and Vero Beach, FL and formerly of South Windsor, beloved husband for 55 years of Patricia (Swift) Allen, passed away on Friday, (December 6, 2013) at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, FL. Born in West Hartford on May 19, 1934, son of the late George W. and Susan (Bekalik) Allen, he was raised in Hartford and was a graduate of Hartford High School, Class of 1951. While in high school, Edward started his career in the grocery business at the age of 16. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955, and after his honorable discharge, he returned to Connecticut and to the grocery business at Stop & Shop. Edward retired as a grocery manager after over 39 years of service at Stop & Shop. In his spare time and during his retirement, he enjoyed traveling domestically and internationally, golfing, fishing, and playing tennis. An avid sports fan, Edward enjoyed watching his favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox and UConn Women's Basketball games. Most of all, he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Margaret Mary Church in South Windsor. Besides his wife Patricia, he leaves three daughters, Susan Donnelly of South Windsor, Dianne Mullaney and her husband John of South Glastonbury, and Lisa Steedman and her husband Chuck of Hopkinton, MA; seven grandchildren who he adored, Erin Donnelly, Sean Donnelly, Andrew Steedman, Michael Steedman, Lauren Mullaney, Taylor Mullaney, and Colin Mullaney; and many dear friends in Connecticut and Florida. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Major Michael W. Donnelly in 2005. A Memorial Mass will be Celebrated on Saturday, December 21, 11 a.m., at St. Margaret Mary Church, 80 Hayes Road, South Windsor. Burial will be private. Edward's family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
