Elliot S. BERMAN Obituary

BERMAN, Elliot S.

Elliot S. Berman, 64 years of age, of West Hartford, died Monday, August 12, 2013 at home with his family at his bedside. Born in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of Roslyn (Dranoff) Berman of West Hartford and the late Isadore Berman. Elliot was a loving husband, son and father who was devoted to his wife, Susan Berman, and to his three children, Courtney, Russell and Alyssa. He had many passions in life, and he enjoyed all of them to their fullest: dentistry, golf, the Mets and Giants, woodworking and, most of all, his family. For Elliot, family included a crowd of dozens - his colleagues, golf buddies, poker pals and more. Everyone got teased, and everyone got a nickname. He decided to become a dentist when he was a boy, and he turned that into a career that spanned nearly four decades. Elliot was dedicated to his practice in West Hartford Center, and he will be remembered as the most fun-loving and generous of colleagues. Golf also became a passion of Elliot's from a young age; he played it rain or shine and all over the world. He loved to recall his best rounds in detail, and to his friends and family, he seemed to be able to remember every shot on every hole he ever played (and in particular his two holes in one). As he grew older, Elliot took enormous joy in the lives of his children. He coached Courtney and Alyssa in soccer, softball and basketball, and he played golf and cheered (and screamed) at the Mets and Giants with Russell. He was never happier than in June, when he learned that Courtney had become engaged to her longtime boyfriend, Jordan Klopf. He had been looking forward to their wedding in October. Elliot and Susan were married in 2006, and Elliot loved spending time with his mother-in-law, Ruth Jacobson, and his late father-in-law, Sherman Jacobson. He shared his woodworking expertise with his stepsons, Josh and Jake Schwartz. Elliot cared for his mother, Roslyn, and he enjoyed a close, lifelong friendship with his brother, Jeffrey, and his nieces, Arielle and Jillian. Elliot's unyielding positive attitude during his nearly four-year battle with cancer inspired his family and friends and lifted the spirits of all around him. He continued to work, travel and golf, and he entertained friends and family at his home until hours before his death. Elliot graduated in 1971 from SUNY- Binghamton and in 1975 from New York University College of Dentistry. He did his internship at Hartford Hospital in General Practice Residency. His faculty appointment as an Assistant Professor was with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Elliot lived in the Hartford area since 1975 and was in practice since 1976 when he joined the Hartford Hospital Medical Staff. He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental Association, the Hartford Dental Society, the International Team of Implantology, and Alpha Omega. He was appointed by Governor Jodi Rell to serve on the Connecticut State Dental Commission, and he served as an examiner on the North East Regional Board. He also belonged to Temple Sinai of Newington. Besides his mother, he leaves his wife, Susan (Jacobson) Berman; his son, Russell Berman of Washington, DC; his daughters, Courtney Berman of Brooklyn, NY, and Alyssa Berman of Boston, MA; and their mother, Debra Berman of Newington, CT; his brother, Jeffrey Berman and his wife Julie of Schenectady, NY; and his step-children, Jacob Schwartz and Joshua Schwartz both of Farmington.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 in the Sanctuary of Temple Sinai, 41 West Hartford Rd., Newington, CT 06111 with Rabbi Jeffrey Bennett officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Whitman Ave., West Hartford. A memorial period will be observed at his home, 11 Chestnut Hill Rd., West Hartford, Wednesday following the interment through 3 p.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary, Hartford.
