HART, George

George Hart (W1NJM) 99, of Newington, died on Sunday (March 24, 2013). He was the loving husband of the late Louise (Stebbins) Hart, for 64 years. George was born on November 1, 1913 in Easton, PA., son of Dr. Edward Hart and Anna Marasco Hart. He was a graduate of Penn State University in 1936 and earned an advanced master's degree in 1939. George worked at the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) and was a charter member. He was the chief developer of the National Traffic System (NTS). He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, returning to his job as a Communications Assistant at ARRL Headquarters. During his 32 year tenure at the League, George served as Communications Assistant, National Emergency Coordinator and ultimately as Communications Manager from 1967 until his retirement in 1978. In 2009, the ARRL Board of Directors created the George Hart Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of the ARRL A-1 Operator Club, the Quarter Century Wireless Association and the Newington Amateur Radio League, which he helped create in 1946 and for which he served as its first president. He was inducted into the CQ Hall of Fame in 2010 for his contributions to the NTS. George was a Newington resident for 66 years. George was predeceased by his wife, Louise Hart; and his son, Dennis Hart, of Newington. He is survived by his son Dr. Frederick Hart of Jefferson, MA; his daughter-in-law, Angela Bellantoni of Newington; six grandchildren: Dr. Kimberly Hart, Adam Hart, Nicol Sheppard, Ryan Hart, Eric Hart and Carina Hart; and eight great-grandchildren. The family would like to recognize the devoted care given to George at Avery Heights Nursing Home.
